The National Honor Society (NHS) was established in 1921, as a recognition program for American high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students are selected for membership through an established school chapter in secondary public and accredited private schools through an application and possible follow-up interview. Candidates must meet the chapter's requirement for scholarship, service, leadership and character in order to be selected for membership. Currently, juniors have been considered for membership if they have maintained a 3.8 GPA. The application process includes the completion of an essay as well as securing verification of involvement in both service and leadership positions. Our chapter has “raised the bar” by requiring additional community service so that we are on par with surrounding high schools. This entails 100 hours of community service both within the school district as well as the community. Continued participation in service projects is required to retain membership. Members must also maintain the chapter's required cumulative GPA as well as continue their involvement in community service. They are required to sign an agreement regarding dismissal from the National Honor Society so that standards are maintained beyond acceptance. Throughout the year, members raise monies via the NHS Candy Sale that takes place twice a week immediately after school. Because of the efforts of these individuals, all members receive an NHS scholarship at graduation. The year would not be complete without the Induction Ceremony. The formal initiation into the society takes place in the auditorium and continues its history of candlelight entrances and speeches regarding scholarship, leadership, service and character. It concludes with the signing of each new member into the chapter. A year-end luncheon acknowledges and thanks the membership for their acceptance and participation. |
